What should you know about convertible roof lifting cylinders?

The working cylinders are by no means designed to last a lifetime, it is good if they can withstand the mandatory warranty period without defects.

We need to know that these working cylinders work on a very small (8-10mm) rod size and their capacity and the load capacity of the diameters are used to the maximum. Manufacturers and car repair shops do not repair them (they are designed in such a way that it is almost impossible to repair them), and the price of new cylinders is often 800-1100 EUR/piece.

How convertible roof cylinders work

Cabrio cylinders are dual-action mini cylinders designed for an open hydraulic circuit.
The power supply designed for it does not change the delivery volume depending on the background volume, the maximum pressure limit is ~70 bar.

What force can the convertible roof cylinders withstand?

We can raise and lower the roof by hand if we work at the end of the lever.
The weight of the roof rests on the hinge points, and if we were to try to raise or lower it by hand, it would require a lot of effort.
The working cylinders of the convertible roof work at these points.

Failure of the convertible roof cylinders

Most of the time, the guide tapes fail due to the contamination of the system, which is not protected from environmental dust.

Dust usually does not damage the hardened chrome rod, but it does damage the teflon guide tape, the pressure rings, the piston seal, and the surface of the cylinder housing in all cases.

The end result, an oil leak from the cylinder, which is an unpleasant situation for a convertible car.

How do we repair cylinders?

The working cylinders are factory designed to be replaced by the operator in the event of failure. Therefore, these cylinders are made of non-dismantlable parts that are bolted down.

The hydraulic sealing kits inside the end caps can be removed by machining, parts are not available from automotive equipment dealerships.

The above mentioned parts are custom made during the repair.

The parts removed by machining are reattached by high-precision laser welding using a unique technology, in such a way that the next time a repair is required, it will cost a fraction of the repair.

The repair uses industrial seals and components and is pressure tested at a much higher pressure than the factory (~200 bar).
